Types of Medicare Plans

Which type of Medicare plan is right for you? We can help you choose the right Medicare product.

Medicare Advantage

A Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as a Part C or MA Plan, offers an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. These plans are provided by private companies approved by Medicare and must adhere to Medicare’s regulations. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you continue to be covered by Medicare, but your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) benefits are administered through the Advantage Plan instead of Original Medicare.

Typically, you will need to use health care providers within the plan’s network, though some plans may offer coverage for out-of-network services. Be sure to use the card from your Medicare Advantage Plan for Medicare-covered services. Keep your Original Medicare card safe, as you’ll need it if you decide to switch back to Original Medicare in the future.

Medicare Supplement Plans

Original Medicare covers a substantial portion of your health care costs, but not everything. To help cover the remaining expenses, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles, you can purchase Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap. These policies are sold by private companies and are designed to bridge the gap left by Original Medicare.

Medigap policies are standardized to ensure consistency and protection. Each policy must adhere to federal and state regulations and be clearly labeled as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” They are categorized by letters A through D, F through G, and K through N in most states. While all Medigap policies offer the same core benefits, some provide additional coverage options, allowing you to select the plan that best suits your needs.

Medicare Part D

Medicare prescription drug coverage is an optional benefit available to all individuals with Medicare. Although you might not currently need prescription medications, it’s wise to consider enrolling in a Medicare drug plan when you first become eligible.

This coverage is offered through Medicare Part D, which provides assistance with the cost of prescription drugs. Even if you don’t take any medications now, joining a Medicare drug plan early can help you avoid potential penalties and ensure you have coverage if your needs change in the future.

If you choose not to enroll in a Medicare drug plan when you are first eligible and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (coverage that is at least as good as Medicare’s standard prescription drug coverage) or qualify for Extra Help, you may face a late enrollment penalty if you decide to join a plan later. This penalty can be a permanent increase in your monthly premium, which makes timely enrollment important to avoid additional costs.

By enrolling when you are first eligible, you can secure your access to prescription drug coverage and protect yourself from future financial penalties.

Medicare Special Needs Plans

Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are designed to address the unique needs of individuals with specific health conditions or circumstances. These plans customize various aspects of their coverage to better support their members, including tailored benefits, specialized provider networks, and targeted drug formularies.

For example, SNPs might be designed for people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, or for those who are institutionalized or have low income. By focusing on the particular needs of these groups, SNPs ensure that their members receive more relevant and effective care.

In addition to covering the standard Medicare services provided by all Medicare Advantage Plans—such as hospital and medical coverage—SNPs may offer additional benefits that are specifically geared toward the health needs of their members. This could include specialized therapies, additional home health care services, or enhanced care coordination.

For individuals who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, known as dual eligibles, there are Dual SNPs. These plans are designed to integrate and streamline benefits from both programs, providing comprehensive coverage and reducing the complexity of managing multiple insurance plans. Dual SNPs coordinate care and ensure that members receive the full range of services and supports available to them through both Medicare and Medicaid.

Hospital Indemnity Plan

Paired with Medicare Advantage, a hospital indemnity plan can help protect against extra out of pocket expenses. This supplemental plan can provide a fixed daily benefit for each day you’re hospitalized, which can be used to cover costs like copayments, deductibles, or non-medical expenses such as transportation and meals.
